Alex Tan Wee Seong is 40 but looks 28 max, an excellent walking advertisement for his product Natural Pure water filtration system! His complexion is remarkably youthful with no lines and glowy, dewy fresh. Attributes he quickly puts down to drinking 10 glasses of NP Water daily!
He grins, "We are told to drink 8 glasses minimum of water daily. This sounds easy as how difficult is it to drink water but in reality we know how tough and boring it is! If you are not thirsty you really feel like torture forcing yourself to drink plain water! It is so tiresome and dreary!"
This I can concur from bitter experience!
I even lose count from how many glasses I have taken throughout the dy. So to avoid cheating, I had to pour equivalent to 8 glasses of water into a big flask which I have to finish within a day. Handsome, gym fit and sexy-hot, if Alex Tan is 188 cm he would be storming the catwalks of Paris, Milan and London, but he can still be a movie star like Tom Cruise (who is 5ft 8in) in Hong Kong or Taiwan. Lucky for us, he is married with kids and prefers to live in Sungai Petani, Kedah.
Despite his success and wealth, Alex Tan insists he came from a poor family who were always struggling. He recalls, "My father Tan Hooi Siah started importing water filters from USA some 35 years ago so he is a pioneer in this business. Back then, business was slow as no one bothered to boil or filter water as it was seen as unnecessary as pollution was a minor issue. I am the second generation in NPWater and I hope my son or daughter will be the third generation!
"I was 19 and joined his business as I had no intention of getting a degree or Masters. I would work after school as a salesman trying to sell water filters. I have 3 younger sisters and I am the eldest so the burden fell on me. Mum used to help but suffered from depression so the burden was on my father and me to care for our family.
"I took over Mum's responsibility for sales and finance. There were no medicines to
treat Mum but we got by. We had no shop, no staff, no real office as we worked from home."
Today, 21 years later, Alex remains dishy and hot, so at 19 he was certainly dazzling and charming. With a harming, smiley personality, he used his natural assets to his advantage.
He took the only available route---knocking on doors!
"The timing was bad as Malaysia was suffering from an economic crisis and it was not easy to sell a water filter system costing RM 2,288!"
But Lady Luck smiled on this hardworking teenager.
"On my first day I sold one water filter to a Malay uncle! I will always be grateful to him for instilling such confidence in me. Making a sale on my very first day gave me the urge to continue and improve my sales target.
"Things went well. First I had genuine confidence in what I was selling which was alsoa health product. Second our profit margin was low as we needed to establish our brand. Even today I follow these principles.
"Back then there was only one product but now we offer 5 kinds of products.I worked hard and my enthusiasm showed. People saw I was genuine and being so young they tended to 'give me a chance'. In less thana year we managed to buy a new Proton Saga!
"I did my homework and despite being so young I could impress customers by answering all their questions. At 19 my other friends were enjoying life like clubbing but I prefered to work. Business is in my blood"
Alex Tan started young. He showed his enterprising, hardworking spirit at a time when most kids his age were playing football or playing video games. At 15 he was already selling watches in pasar malam(night market). At 18 after SPM he worked as a waiter in a hotel.
"I went to school in the morning and worked in the afternoon," recalls this businessman. "People say what a tough life but not to me. When you come from a poor family you do what you can. I never considered work as a chore or something horrible. I thrive on hard work as most successful people will tell you and I certainly did not moan or complainabout hard work."
Being so young and looking the part, Alex Tan was usually invited inside the houses and asked by the head of the home why he worked so hard. "I was young, energetic and chatty so I told them the truth---that I had to make sales to help sustain my family and reduce my father's burden.Most customers were sympathetic and became friends. I found my forte in marketing and sales. Better than amy father, haha!"
He used to sell 4 to 5 water filter units each month which was considered excellent. The money he raised paid the loans and groceries. Slowly he began to sell 10 units per month as word spread about this young man trying to make a go at life.
"I was good at after sales service also! I was quick to respond if there was any complaint and problem which remains to this day as a sale is the starting point of a transaction"
Alex Tan is too modest but admitted finally his youth and good looks played a role as many took an instant liking to this personable young man! At 30 he took over his father's business and continues to run it to this day.
From Sungai Petani which is more 'ulu' than my hometown of Kota Baru, he now has sales offices all over Malaysia and East Malaysia plus Singapore, Thailand and Brunei. Now he is encroaching into China.
In 2001 he saw the writing on the wall and switched to Korean water filters. The American brand was stagnant with no innovations or new products and it was time to look east. The US dollar was strengthening too fast and ate into profit margins.
His friendship with supermodel Amber Chia led to the formation of his brand NPWater. he went to Amber's house to install and while chatting to her, she suggested the name Natural Pure Water or NP Water since he was emphasising how natural and pure the water was!

Today Alex Tan looks like to the manor born but he admist life was tough and a struggle till he was 27. "I took my first overseas trip aged 27 to China. I tried selling Malaysian bird's nest but have stopped."
He has registered NP Natural Pure Water and is proud his NP Water's hydrogen and alkaline water has 1,700 molecules per ppb which is a lot!
