Lets have a look at Luxury Watches on Chrono24 and sort by price. The first one you don’t know may be it:
And up comes, for just about 2 million dollar, a watch by Jacob & Co. called Caviar. I have never heard of it, so it may qualify as not well known. Looking at the watch, what you may also be paying for is the diamonds, of which there are many.
It is actually a really pretty watch that ticks some right boxes for me but lets see if we can get the most expensive unknown ones without diamonds. Next appear a few Pateks, well known, with and without diamonds, some special Audemars Piguet Royal Oaks, another Jacob & Co with diamonds and more, or just look at this one,
and then a Richard Mille, no diamonds, at a bargain of 700,000 dollars. You know Richard Mille? If not, that may be your winner on how to charge the highest price for the least known watch made with low cost materials, carbon in this case.
Back to Jacob & Co, they can do a bit better even. Here is a masterpiece, the Astronomia,
no diamonds, not significantly cheaper than the Richard Mille, if at all, and, do you know it? We may have a winner.
“Luxury” or not, $5000 is a good amount of money to have available for a watch. Most watches in this price range are very good indeed, and there is a lot of choice.
I believe that at this price point it is not possible to beat Grand Seiko in terms of precision machining, in particular of dial features, but I do not have first hand experience with them.
Which watch is the “best” also depends on what you want to do with it. They are not all equally suitable for all situations, styles and environments.
In any case, the “best” watch is the one that you feel best about when wearing it. Things to consider include the aesthetics, technology, size, style and brand of the watch, and there will be very different answers to this question for different people. As there are endless possibilities, I wil
… (more)A 2,000 USD watch is not a luxury watch. It is a middle-end watch bordering onto high-end. I know that 2.000 USD seem like a lot of money to a lot of people (especially when spent on a watch) but conventionally luxury watches start from 25.000 USD onwards. This means that Rolexes are not luxury watches.
This said, you can buy some amazing stuff with 2.000 USD - which is a very good price level to own a watch. Especially if it is a vintage watch (that would be the best way to get a lot of watch power for the money).
However, since buying vintage is not always an option, I will cite you a few of the ones I would sugges
… (more)Do yourself a favor and stop using the word “cheap”. Use the word “affordable” because, if you start looking for a cheap watch, that’s what you’ll end up with.
Now, if you’re looking for a high quality, affordable Swiss made timepiece, take a long, hard look at Oris. It’s not a well known brand, but they’ve been quietly producing high quality watches in Holstein, Switzerland for over 100 years.
I bought my Oris Williams F1 15 years ago, and it still runs like a champ. It’s a wonderful piece and, at 41mm is quite comfortable. I own several “high end” watches from Panerai, Rolex, Breitling, IWC, Omega and more and, if I had to choose only one watch to wear for the rest of my life, it would be this one.
I bought this watch in San Diego in 2005. With both the rubber strap and the stainless steel
… (more)If you like well-made hand crafted watches only for their artistry, beauty and functional quality, you can safe a lot of money buy staying away from the famous brands and from Switzerland, but do not make the mistake and order something that is cobbled together from industrially produced parts and made to look superficially like a hand made Lange or Patek, or even has a tourbillon or something that looks like one. A tell tale sign is that these watches are often crammed with “complications” and lack simplicity and elegance. Other than the super stars like Journe or Voutilainen, there are independent watchmakers in various countries, who produce fabulous luxury watches, some even with fully in-house developed and manufactured movements. They usually have a very limited number of models, few
… (more)You can never know. I have once replied that in my opinion Hublot and Jaquet Droz make the tackiest watches known, so, I would have considered them a bad buy, at least for me. What I had in mind were watches like these two below.
They are quite hideous, each in their own way, while both focus nevertheless on high quality craftsmanship.
Now look at these two, made by the same companies. I would not hesitate to wear either of them, and I would absolutely love them should I have bought them.
I have omitted all watches that fetch a high price only because of their historical value. I have omitted all watches that are expensive because a lot of diamonds were used.
That leaves as a watch that is still being made today:
