"The Nautilus is one of the most popular watches out there, no questions. It is probably also one that has the most flaws. And by far. Let me (Marc Montagne) explain why.
“I know you love this watch Marc, but I must tell you that I think it REALLY looks like sh*it!”
Those were the exact words a friend told me the other day by seeing the Nautilus at my wrist and I knew he was being honest. I simply laughed back and told him he’ll understand later and that we’ll discuss this in a few years!
The design of the Nautilus is unlike any other watch and polarizing one for sure. No one will ever tell you that your Speedmaster looks horrible. With the Nautilus? Trust me, it will happen. But then, design remains a subjective topic, there are other much more tangible disadvantages with the Nautilus.
The Nautilus is a scratch magnet. No matter how hard you try to avoid it, with its subtle polished and brushed surfaces, the Nautilus will capture scratches. This is even worse as the bracelet has the same level of finishing and detail, meaning even more room for those scratches!
The Nautilus is (very) expensive. When it was launched in 1976, the advertisement even said “one of the world’s costliest watches is made in stainless steel”.
Today, its retail price has almost doubled in 10 years and its closest competitor, the Royal Oak from Audemars Piguet, which is far from being affordable, is still $2′000 less expensive.
Not to mention the fact that given the extremely high demand for the Nautilus, you’ll have to pay almost $30′000 more than its retail price for a Nautilus on the secondary market.
The Nautilus has an insane waiting list. Because of that same demand level, there is a waiting list of years to get one at retail price, not to mention that most boutiques won’t even take your name for the list considering how small is the supply and big is the demand. Watchmaking is all about observing time, right?
You are almost afraid of wearing it. Given the craziness around that watch, if you are lucky enough to have one, you will get somehow afraid of wearing it and scratching it, potentially affecting its resale value.
When you wear the Nautilus, you will make sure you will not be doing activities that might end up damaging it. This is clearly not the good old toolwatch that you strap on your wrist without thinking about it.
The folding clasp is hard to manipulate. A brand new Nautilus is pretty hard to open. It loosens a bit with time and you get used to it, but it will never be as smooth as most metal bracelets out there.
You know the worst part with the Nautilus?
Despite all of its disadvantages, it still is one of the watches I have the most pleasure wearing.
Sometimes you just can’t explain magic!
