Fresh Take Group Show | Black Eye: Aisha Rosli Solo Show

Dear All,

Cuturi Gallery is proud to present a new series of exhibitions called:  FRESH TAKE. The intention is simple: identify new talents from Singapore and give them the chance to exhibit their works for the very first time.  The First Edition of this series will start this Saturday 6th of February in Room 65 of the gallery! We will have 8 artworks by 8 young artists for you to discover, priced between SGD 480 and 1,600. With their unique perspectives and approaches, the eight artists come together to offer a fresh take on art-making and self-expression.

We will be hosting an Opening Day showcasing all works in the presence of the artists. Join us!

Saturday 6 February – from 12 to 7pm
Location: 61 Aliwal Street 199937
RSVP is mandatory by clicking the below button or via email at singapore@cuturigallery.com.

‘Redemption Through Chaos’ explores the idea that bliss and peace can only be birthed through chaos. Violence has always been our past. From the Greek tragedies to various religious contexts, tranquility only came about after disarray. It is also prevalent in today’s state of affairs where war, violence and suffering inspire the need for peace and stability.

‘Umbilical’ depicts a cosmonaut drifting endlessly in space, exploring the vast wonders it has to offer, yet forever bound to the earth by his umbilical cable. He knows he does not belong in the beyond, he is an outsider and will always be.

This painting was made to convey just the right amount of emotions that were felt by the artist at the moment it was made, in hopes of being able to understand the noise around them by selectively painting only what is more necessary, and leaving out what is less so.

‘Lie’ comments on the loneliness epidemic that is prevalent in the ageing population. Sat in an animalistic manner in a room with a chandelier, the figure is depicted in a dominating red with exaggerated proportions, yearning for attention as she stares at the audience. Around the red figure, are facades which have been fabricated by her.

Aisha Rosli: Black Eye Solo Exhibition:

Born in Singapore, Rosli graduated from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) with a Diploma in Fine Art (Western Painting) in 2018. As of last year, Rosli was part of the inaugural roster of artists under c/discoveries, a programme dedicated to supporting young emerging artists helmed by Cuturi Gallery. Her work has since been featured in exhibitions at Sangkring Art Space, Yogyakarta (2018); Coda Culture, Singapore (2019); Cuturi Gallery, Singapore (2020); Unit London, London (2020); and Art Agenda, Singapore (2021).

In Black Eye, Rosli touches on the aftermath of ambiguous situations implicated in the appearance of a black eye, relating to multiple scenarios insinuating states of abuse, distress, anxiety, insomnia. Appearing solitary and detached, the figures emanate a sense of numbness that is both self-contained, yet emanative through to the deceptively recognisable chambers they are confined in.
